An original price by iyara art. Kinky Gold is a celebration of African hair. Growing up in a society where I would not be allowed to school with my hair really impacted and created a need in me to question this rule.
The excuse they gave me was that my hair is not good enough or it’s not neat, but I never believed it and so iv set out to question it further in my art. To make matters worse the kids without African hair were allowed to keep their hair while we walked around like bald smart slaves. Do we know what this to a child’s self-esteem?.
In kinky gold I celebrate African hair in all its curls and kinks, all the tangles and unruliness, cutting it off as a rule is like cutting part of who we are. And our hair is our golden crown. It’s kinky gold
